California Vehicle Code Fine & DMV Points Chart

This California Vehicle Code Points Chart lets you look up any California traffic ticket by Vehicle Code section to see the total statewide bail (fine) and how many DMV points a conviction adds to your driving record. Figures come straight from the Judicial Council’s official 2026 bail schedule.

Scope: This chart covers only the Traffic Infraction Fixed Penalty Schedule for Vehicle Code violations. It does not include traffic misdemeanors. For the complete schedule, including misdemeanors, see the official Uniform Bail and Penalty Schedules PDF.

How to read this chart

Every California traffic ticket cites a Vehicle Code (VC) section. It's printed on the citation itself, usually right next to the officer's description of the violation. Find that section number below to see the statewide first-offense Total Bail amount listed in the 2026 Judicial Council schedule and the DMV points ordinarily assigned to a conviction. Search by section number, keyword, or filter by point value.

Will my ticket add points to my license?

When you're cited for a traffic ticket, it isn't reported to the DMV right away, so it won't show up on your driving record immediately. The court only notifies the DMV after a conviction, including a bail forfeiture, and only if the Vehicle Code section you were cited under carries points. If you're found not responsible, or the case is dismissed, no points are ever added to your record.

We try to keep this chart as accurate and current as possible, but we can't guarantee that every fee or point value listed here is exact or up to date. Before relying on any figure, please check the official Uniform Bail and Penalty Schedules PDF, the courthouse listed on your citation, or the California DMV. So Cal Traffic Lawyers and the Law Offices of Mark A. Gallagher are not responsible for any errors or omissions in this chart, or for decisions made based on it.

Why do some sections repeat with different fees?

Registration, equipment, and license-related infractions are cited two ways. Rows marked A are non-correctable: the officer determined the violation can't simply be fixed and shown to the court, so the full statewide bail applies. Rows marked B are correctable: if you fix the problem (e.g., renew an expired registration, repair faulty equipment, or obtain a valid license) and show proof to the court by the deadline, the fee drops to a flat administrative fee.

A handful of sections also carry documented exceptions to the point value shown. For example, the schedule assigns a point to certain handheld-device violations (VC 23123(a), 23123.5(a), 23124(b)) only when the conviction falls within 36 months of a prior conviction for the same offense, and VC 21655.1(a) carries 1.5 DMV points when committed in a commercial vehicle. This chart shows the schedule's ordinary point value; it doesn't flag every such exception.

Why do some sections repeat with different fees?

Registration, equipment, and license-related infractions are cited two ways. Rows marked A are non-correctable: the officer determined the violation can't simply be fixed and shown to the court, so the full statewide bail applies. Rows marked B are correctable: if you fix the problem (e.g., re-register the vehicle, get proof of insurance) and show proof to the court by the deadline, the fee drops to a flat administrative fee.

Frequently asked questions

How many DMV points is my ticket worth?

Search your ticket's Vehicle Code section in the chart above and check the DMV Points column. Most equipment and paperwork infractions are worth 0 points. Most moving violations are worth 1 point. A small number of the most serious infractions in this schedule are worth 2 points. Points are only added after a conviction (including a bail forfeiture), not just from receiving a citation.

What counts as a moving violation in California?

California law doesn't define "moving violation" in one single section, but the term is generally used for violations that happen while a vehicle is in motion and involve how it's being driven, like speeding, an unsafe lane change, following too closely, or running a red light. Non-moving violations typically involve equipment, registration, or paperwork issues, such as expired tags or a broken taillight, and usually don't carry DMV points. On this chart, most violations worth 1 or 2 DMV points are moving violations, while most 0-point violations are equipment or administrative issues. If you're unsure how your specific citation is classified, the court listed on your ticket or the DMV can confirm.

Will fighting my ticket keep points off my record?

If you're found not responsible, or the case is dismissed, no points are added. If you attend traffic violator school (where eligible) after a conviction, California generally allows the point to be masked from your public record, though the conviction itself still exists. A traffic attorney can advise on your specific situation.

How long do DMV points stay on my record?

DMV monitors your driving record, and each time you're convicted of a moving violation, the court reports it. According to the DMV, traffic convictions and collisions generally stay on your record for at least 36 months, and some violations may remain longer. Your license could also be suspended if your record shows 4 points in 12 months, 6 points in 24 months, or 8 points in 36 months. See the DMV's California Driver Handbook for more detail.

What happens if I get too many points?

California's Negligent Operator Treatment System (NOTS) can act on a driver's license once a driver reaches 4 points in 12 months, 6 points in 24 months, or 8 points in 36 months. The DMV typically issues a warning letter first, followed by probation or a 6-month suspension for drivers who continue accumulating points. If you're concerned about points on your record, our team can review your options.

Is the "Total Bail Fee" what I'll actually pay?

The Total Bail Fee shown is the statewide first-offense amount set by the Judicial Council, which includes the base fine plus mandatory state and county penalty assessments and surcharges. Thirty California counties are legally permitted to set higher amounts, and fines can be doubled (or bumped a full category) in highway construction zones and designated safety-enhancement double-fine zones. Your actual citation may differ, so check with the court listed on your ticket, or contact us and we can help confirm the details for your specific citation.

About This California Vehicle Code Points Chart

This California Vehicle Code Points Chart draws its figures directly from the Traffic Infraction Fixed Penalty Schedule in the Judicial Council of California's Uniform Bail and Penalty Schedules, 2026 Edition (Cal. Rules of Court, rule 4.102), covering Vehicle Code infractions. Total Bail Fee amounts reflect a first-offense conviction and already include the base fine plus the mandatory state penalty assessment, state court construction penalty, DNA fund penalty, county penalty assessment, and 20% state surcharge required by Penal Code sections 1464 and 1465.7 and Government Code sections 70372 and 76000.

  • This chart covers Vehicle Code traffic infractions only, from the Traffic Infraction Fixed Penalty Schedule. It does not include traffic misdemeanors, which are a separate schedule within the same document. For the full list of both infractions and misdemeanors, see the official PDF linked below.
  • Thirty California counties (Penal Code § 1463.28) are authorized to set Total Bail amounts higher than the statewide figures shown here.
  • Fines are generally doubled, or bumped one full penalty category, for qualifying offenses committed in an active highway construction/maintenance zone (VC § 42009) or a designated safety-enhancement double-fine zone.
  • This chart lists the four fields requested for this reference (VC Section, Offense, Total Bail Fee, and DMV Points) and does not reproduce the schedule's per-section statutory footnotes. Consult the official schedule for complete citations.
  • County and local court fees, ability-to-pay reductions, installment plans, and traffic school eligibility are not reflected in the Total Bail Fee column.
  • A small number of speed- and weight-related sections (36 of the 1,240 listed) don't carry a fixed Total Bail Fee in the schedule itself. Instead, the fee is calculated from a separate Speed Chart or Overweight Chart based on how far over the limit the violation was, so those rows show "See Speed Chart" or "See Overweight Chart" rather than a dollar figure.

This page is for general informational purposes only and is not legal advice. Bail and penalty amounts change annually and can vary by county, so always confirm current amounts with the court named on your citation. For advice about a specific ticket, consult a licensed California attorney.
